John Boone

Services were held Monday for John "Jack" Boone, who died Jan. 7 at his home in Scotts Valley. He was 83.
Mr. Boone was born in Canonsburg, Pa., and was a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He was a longtime resident of New York. An engineering physicist for IBM Corp., his career in research and development spanned more than 25 years.
Boone and his wife Helen moved to California in 1960, and settled in Scotts Valley in 1972.
He was an active member of Live Oak United Methodist Church in Santa Cruz, and was a founding member of the Loving and Learning Day Care Center. He was also a lay leader, and taught Sunday school at the church for many years. He was a 23-year member of the New York Masonic Lodge.
He was also active in civic affairs, having served on the Scotts Valley City Council and been involved with the Scotts Valley Historical Society. He was a member of the Scotts Valley Lions Club, and the Montevalle Estates Association Board. He was 13-year member of the Cabrillo Community College Board of Trustees, and served on the board of the Cabrillo College Foundation.
Upon his retirement he became an artist, attending numerous art classes at Cabrillo. He also loved to collect stamps and coins. He enjoyed playing the stock market, and was involved in a local stock investors club.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen Boone of Scotts Valley; his daughter, Carol Olmstead of Palo Alto, and Nancy Vermette of St. Albert, Alberta, Canada; his son, Alan Boone of San Jose, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Jan. 11 at Live Oak United Methodist Church in Santa Cruz. A private committal at Oak Spring Cemetery in Canonsburg, Pa., is under the direction of Norman's Family Chapel of Soquel. Remembrances are preferred to the Cabrillo College Foundation, 6500 Soquel Drive, Aptos, Calif. 95003; or to Live Oak United Methodist Church, Santa Cruz, Calif. 95062.
